About 40 percent of the new sailors, fresh out of boot camp, will stay in the Great Lakes for training at the Great Lakes Support Training Center.
The Great Lakes Training Support Center provides training and education to new sailors at the apprentice level and operational support at Learning Sites (LS) in the Great Lakes, including the Center for Surface Combat Systems, the Surface Warfare School Command, the Center for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Diving. , and the Naval Special Warfare Training School.

One of the landmarks in this area is building 1, also known as the clock tower building. The building was completed in 1911 and is made of red brick, and has a tower above the third floor of the building. The large parade ground in front of the administration building is called Ross Field.

The Base Realignmt and Closure Commission of 1993 led to the closure of Naval Training Cter San Diego, California and Naval Training Cter Orlando, Florida, their associated recruiting training commands, and the consolidation of hostilities training based at the US Navy in the Great Lakes . Approximately 40,000 recruits pass through Recruit Training Command each year and approximately 7,000 recruits are on deployment at any given time. RTC Great Lakes has been in operation for over 100 years.

The Culinary Specialist (CS) A-school was also taught at TSC Great Lakes until December 10, 2010, when the school graduated its last class. The course was integrated into the US Army's parallel program and moved to Fort Lee, Virginia.

Legendary band composer and marching band composer John Philip Sousa was commissioned a lieutenant in the Navy during World War I. In 1923, Naval Reserve Air Base, Great Lakes was commissioned. Employment training declined after the war and was stopped in 1933.
In 1932, Great Lakes had 102 properties on 507 acres (205 ha). The port was built at the time at a cost of $1 million ($19.9 million today).
On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan, and about 6,000 sailors were being trained in the Great Lakes. This increased to 68,000 in six months; by September 1942 over 100,000 sailors were being trained in the Great Lakes. The base grew to 1,600 acres (650 ha) over the next 10 months. By mid-1943 there were over 700 instructors in Class A service schools.
